What Is an Establishment Card in Dubai?

Starting a business in Dubai involves more than obtaining a trade licence. If your company plans to hire employees, sponsor investors or complete immigration-related transactions, you will also need an establishment card in Dubai.
The establishment card is an electronic company record issued through the relevant immigration authority. In Dubai, this service is handled by the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA Dubai).
What Information Does an Establishment Card Contain?
An establishment card connects your company to the UAE immigration system. According to the UAE authorities, it may contain registered company information such as:
- Company trade name
- Trade licence number
- Business activity
- Partners’ details
- Authorised signatories
- Establishment identification details
It allows the company to access corporate immigration and residency services under its registered business file.
Why Is an Establishment Card Important?
A trade licence allows your company to conduct approved business activities, but it does not automatically activate the company’s immigration file.
A valid establishment card may be required to:
- Apply for investor or partner visas
- Process employee entry permits
- Sponsor employee residence visas
- Access company immigration services
- Register authorised signatories
- Renew or cancel company-sponsored visas
- Update company immigration information
Without an active establishment card, your company may face delays when beginning visa and immigration procedures.
Trade License vs Establishment Card
Although they are connected, these documents serve different purposes. A trade license confirms that the company is legally authorized to conduct specific business activities. An establishment card registers the company with the immigration authority and enables it to complete visa and residency transactions. Your company will generally need a valid trade license before applying for an establishment card.
How to Apply for an Establishment Card in Dubai
The general process includes:
- Confirm that the trade licence is active.
- Prepare the required company and signatory documents.
- Submit the application through GDRFA smart services, an authorised Amer Centre or the relevant free-zone authority.
- Review the retrieved company information.
- Upload any additional documents requested.
- Pay the applicable government and service fees.
- Receive the electronic establishment card after approval.
GDRFA Dubai lists an expected processing time of approximately 48 hours, provided the application is complete and meets all requirements.
